If Don Quixote spoke English and Spanish, he would have been unstoppable.

Iván Díaz, M.A., lecturer in Spanish

Program
What will you learn?

Students of English Studies with Spanish learn English and Spanish simultaneously. The English courses are taught at a higher level of competency and include linguistics, intensive language development, as well as cultural and historical background of the English speaking countries. Spanish classes, on the other hand, start at the beginner level and gradually develop language competences. The aim for students is to reach CEFR C1 English and B2 Spanish proficiency level or higher.

Who the program is addressed to?

The languages of Shakespeare and Cervantes open a door to the world of two very prolific literary traditions and diverse cultures that complement each other. If you are interested in other cultures, have a passion for learning languages and for meeting people from different cultures, the English Studies with Spanish Program at SWPS University may be the right choice for you.

Requirements: English proficiency - CEFR B2 or higher, supported by appropriate English proficiency certificates.

Specializations
Focus on your interests

  1. Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)

TEFL specialization prepares students for a teaching profession. Graduates can work not only in public schools, but also in private and language schools. They may also choose to combine teaching with a translation career. Additionally, students become familiar with the latest teaching methodologies and acquire competencies in the field of Teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP). During teaching internships, under the guidance of a coordinator, students create their own European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages.

  2. Cultural and Literary Studies

Perfect for enthusiasts of the English speaking countries and English-based cultures. We focus on analytical and writing skills as well as on the ability to present a coherent argument in the written form. The path offers an opportunity to study the major literary texts in English culture and to learn the tools and methodology indispensable in writing about complex phenomena. Some topics covered include: pop culture, film, interactive storytelling, literary criticism and cultural theory.

  3. English for Business Environment

English for Business Environment is focused on teaching business English with elements of economy, marketing and public relations. Students learn about organizational structure, business management, business environment and market issues. They also become familiar with the style of business writing and learn how to develop business plans, reports and business strategy. Moreover, they gain general business skills, such as presentation or negotiation skills and learn about business code of conduct.

  4. Translation studies

Translation Studies focus on translation theory and practice and on intensive language skills development. All courses are taught by experienced translators and linguists. Students become familiar with the requirements of general and specialized translation. They practice various translation methods and techniques employed in written and oral translation. All translation courses are developed in accordance with the guidelines of the European Union’s Directorate-General for Translation.

Career prospects

Graduates of English Studies build successful careers in various industries, including education, translation, international business, media, marketing and advertising, film and TV production, government administration, and NGOs.
