Translation Program

  • Level: Graduate (Master Degree)

Program description

The program is designed for applicants with an interest in translation or in becoming professional translators. The program includes, above all, specialized workshops devoted to various types of translation and conducted in selected pairs of language. Further groups of workshops relate to issues connected with the translation of specialized texts – advertising, journalistic/promotional, literary, scholarly/scientific, business, and audio-visual. The core of the program consists of classes devoted to the theory and criticism of translation, and to key cultural, literary, and linguistic issues from a comparative perspective. The range of classes is supplemented by seminars/tutorials dealing with tools and techniques of translation, the analysis and editing/proofreading of texts, and issues of quality in translation. The structure of the translation studies program aims to meet the changing demands of the job market.

In academic year 2018/2019, we are recruiting students for the following source-target language pairings:

  • English → Polish
  • Swedish → Polish
  • English → Ukrainian
  • Polish → English
  • Polish → Ukrainian

* Core subjects in academic year 2018/2019 are conducted in Polish. As a result, all students must have a command of Polish sufficient to enable them to participate in these classes.

Participants whose level of Polish or English language competency is below CEFR C1, may enroll in our summer or full-year Language Courses », prior to applying to the Translation Program.

 

Who is the program intended for?

Besides linguistic competence, candidates should possess good analytic abilities and clear cultural sensitivity. This program is designed for those who are interested in developing key translation competences and in developing the tools and abilities necessary to function independently in the workplace. It is also for those who want to move forward in their intellectual and professional development.

Language and admission requirements

  • Candidates should meet the following three criteria:
  • possess at least a first cycle university diploma in any field of study
  • obtain a positive result in the competence test
  • have documented knowledge of:

source language → at level C1 or higher (according to CEFR European standards)
→ target language at native-speaker or close to native-speaker level

Professional perspectives

Our graduates will be ready to work as translators, text editors/proofreaders, and project leaders. They will be able to find employment as language specialists working in their own small businesses or working with translation firms, national and international institutions, NGOs, embassies and consulates, publishers, the media, advertising agencies, as well as law firms and institutions in the financial sector.

Key features

  • An innovative teaching program focused on developing translation competence, and on imparting the practical skill required by the contemporary marketplace
  • Classes conducted by experienced academic staff and practicing translators. - - - Innovative teaching methods based on the latest technology (audio-visual equipment, up-to-date computer hardware/software, interactive learning platforms, cabins for simultaneous translation work).

  • Instruction in how to use the latest translator’s tools, including CAT and OCR programs, terminology management systems, proofreading/editing programs, and computerized tools for project managers.

  • Small workshop groups. A maximum of ten participants makes it possible to develop students’ skills more effectively and to monitor each participant’s progress.

 

 

  • A practical and interesting program of studies.

  • Interested students are invited to work on the organizational aspects of international academic conferences in the series Translation and Culture.

  • Study in a faculty that received the designation A in the latest Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education quality assessment procedure.
