SWPS University has acquired the historic building, formerly known as the Silesian Seminary [Seminarium Śląskie], in Kraków. After undergoing renovations, the building will serve as the new campus of SWPS University in the south of Poland. First classes are expected to commence there in October 2025.
Architectural Gem in the style of 1920s European Modernism
Our newly acquired building was designed by two renowned Polish architects, Zygmunt Gawlik and Franciszek Mączyński, and was constructed between 1926 and 1928. Originally, it housed the Silesian Theological Seminary [Śląskie Seminarium Duchowne]. The Silesian Seminary was moved to Katowice in 1980, and for the last four decades, the building belonged to the Jagiellonian University.
This monumental three-winged structure, a continuation of the architects' prior collaboration on the Cathedral in Katowice, boasts a simple yet striking design with symmetrical forms and tall windows, imparting a distinctive character to the edifice. Rich in details and ornaments, the building features four bas-reliefs by Xawery Dunikowski, an acclaimed Polish sculptor of the inter-war period, which depict the four Evangelists. Other notable decorative elements include a wrought-iron grille embellished with dragon heads, which adorn the entrance door and the gate. Although the building is predominantly modernist in style, subtle classical elements add to its architectural appeal.
I am delighted that the new SWPS University’s Józef Tischner campus will be situated in such a prestigious location and that it will be housed in a building of unquestionable historical significance. I am confident that those who study and work there will truly appreciate the qualities of this place. Its proximity to other universities and cultural institutions will facilitate collaboration with our partners. Renovated and refurbished, to meet the needs of modern education, the building will fulfill its academic purpose and will serve inhabitants of Kraków and the Lesser Poland region.
Prof. Roman Cieślak
Rector of SWPS University
All renovations will follow strict guidelines and recommendations of the local cultural property conservator. We are aware that the city has been carrying out works in the area, according to its urban development plan. We have been analyzing options of expanding our Kraków campus in the future to make it the best possible space for our students and employees and for the local community.
Ewa Ger, Ph.D.

The newly acquired building is situated in a prime location in Kraków, close to the Old Town and across from the National Museum.
