The CEEYouth project is dedicated to young Polish and Lithuanian migrants in the United Kingdom. The project is executed by an international Polish-Lithuanian consortium financed by the NCN DAINA grant. The research focuses on two major ‘new EU’ sending countries and looks at what migrants 34 years of age “do” to handle the result of Brexit Referendum vote. The objectives of the project are:

  1. To compare migrating youth from Poland and Lithuania in reference to those who stayed in their home countries;
  2. To compare and evaluate whether young Poles and Lithuanians are socially “anchored” or embedded in their destination country;
  3. To explore various risks experienced by young migrants from Poland and Lithuania in the context of Brexit;
  4. To analyze how the unfolding implications of Brexit affect life trajectories of Poles and Lithuanians, with special focus on transitioning to adulthood;
  5. To explore and compare the latest return migration of young Poles and Lithuanians;
  6. To highlight migratory behaviors of ethnic Poles from Lithuania and ethnic Lithuanians from Poland in the UK.

Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing literature, i.e. Polish and international academic work on migration, risks, youth and other themes of the project;
  • Handling and integrating large databases;
  • Participating in the preparation of survey research tools (questionnaires);
  • Carrying out quantitative data analysis under the supervision of senior team members;
  • Participating in project outputs, i.e. attending conferences with paper presentations, co-authoring research reports and scholarly article/papers;
  • Assisting in the recruitment process of research participants;
  • Cooperating with the Youth Research Center;
  • Handling administrative tasks in the project.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in social sciences;
  • Status of a Ph.D. student, i.e. current enrollment in doctoral studies in sociology or a related discipline. While it is not mandatory, an interest in writing a Ph.D. thesis on the basis of the project’s findings would be a definite asset;
  • Proven competence and track record track record of working with mixed-methods approaches, i.e. good qualitative and quantitative research skills;
  • Familiarity with handling large databases, good analytical skills and knowledge of descriptive statistics;
  • Proficiency in MS Office software, in particular advanced Excel skills;
  • Research interests matching the main topics explored in the project.

Language requirements:

  • Fluent Polish, or willingness to gain a working competence in this language;
  • Good command of English (level B2 at the minimum).

This post is envisioned as a non-full-time research involvement on a contractual basis. The post holder will be required to support the activities of the project throughout its duration. Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing and ensuring the overall timely completion of the project’s objectives related to the qualitative research;
  • Supporting implementation of the core CEEYou(th) research, i.e. involvement in the development of both quantitative (survey questionnaire) and qualitative (interview guides) tools;
  • Recruiting and maintaining a panel of participants for the QLS that will be conducted using the technique of asynchronous interviews (15-20 participants interviewed on multiple occasions over three years);
  • Developing a codebook and an analytical framework of handling qualitative data collected in the project, bearing in mind an international, comparative perspective adopted in the project;
  • Contributing to and leading scientific outputs of the project, i.e. attending conferences with paper presentations and co-authoring research reports and scholarly articles/papers;
  • Collaborating with an international project team, especially with partners in Lithuania and advisors in the UK;
  • Working in the Youth Research Center at SWPS University and supporting its activities.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s or doctoral degree in sociology or a closely related discipline;
  • Excellent qualitative research methods skills, a good understanding of mixed-methods approaches. Familiarity with survey methodologies and statistical analysis would be a definite asset;
  • Proven track record of academic publications in English on: migration studies, youth studies, ethnicity, labor market, work, risks and other topics related to the projects;
  • Solid research experience and the ability to work in interdisciplinary and geographically dispersed project teams. Previous participation in NCN and/or internationally funded research projects would be a definite asset;
  • Research interests matching the main topics explored in the project.

Language requirements:

  • Fluent Polish to conduct interviews;
  • Excellent English language skills to publish internationally in the recognized, academic outlets.

  • Leading the analysis of the quantitative data used and collected in the project, with the support of the Lithuanian Partner and Ph.D. student;
  • Participating and leading scientific outputs of the project, i.e. attending conferences with paper presentations and co-authoring research reports and scholarly articles/papers;
  • Collaborating with the international project team, especially with counterparts in Lithuania and advisors in the UK;
  • Working in the Youth Research Center at SWPS University and supporting its activities;
  • Co-supervising junior researchers involved in the CEEYouth project.

Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in sociology or a closely related discipline;
  • Excellent skills in quantitative research methods, a good understanding of mixed-methods approaches would be a definite asset;
  • Proven track record of reports and academic publications in English on: migration studies, youth studies, ethnicity, labor market, work, risks and other topics related to the project.
