Scholar’s Codex

Scholar’s Codex

Dr. Magdalena Kozyra, a researcher from SWPS University’s Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies in Kraków, has contributed an academic article to the newly published Scholar’s Codex, which explores themes in games produced by FromSoftware. Download a free digital sample of the book.

A love letter to FromSoftware games

A recently published “Scholar’s Codex” analyzes FromSoftware’s games, such as Bloodborne, Dark Souls and Elden Ring. The book asks questions like:

  • What does it mean to be human in Dark Souls?
  • How do games like Demon’s Souls explore and ultimately subvert failure?
  • Why do missing items, cut content, and fan speculation become part of the canon?

It’s a collection of articles by various researchers, including Magdalena Kozyra from SWPS University. She wrote an article titled “Failure and Friendship: Blue Eye Stone” in which she examines the importance of failure in Demon’s Soul.

The excerpt from the book, which includes Kozyra's article, is available for free download.
