Depression in children and adolescents is the challenge of our time. It brings suffering, learning difficulties and behavioral problems to young people. The answer to this severe problem is the depressive disorders prevention program at the SWPS University Clinic of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. It provides up to 25 individual therapy sessions with professionals from the team at our university-based clinic. The program is fully funded by the Masovian Voivodeship. The therapy is provided free of charge for the participants.
Who can participate in the program?
"Depression? No, thank you" is a depressive disorder prevention program for children and adolescents living in the Masovian Voivodeship. It is funded by the local government. The program offers young people up to 25 free therapy sessions with specialists in cognitive behavioral therapy. Once enrolled in the program, participants are assessed for depressive symptoms. If the diagnosis of a mood disorder confirms depression, individual work with a psychotherapist begins. If the test result for depression is negative, the clinic team will recommend other forms of help and carry out psycho-educational activities for the participant.
A person applying for the program on the day of the enrollment must:
- Be at least 12 years old and not older than 21 years old,
- Reside in the Masovian Voivodeship,
- Provide their informed consent to participate in the program (in the case of individuals under the age of 18, the informed consent form to participate in the program will be completed by the person applying for the program and the child's parent/legal guardian),
- Provide a written statement confirming that the individual is not currently participating in another program of a similar nature funded by public funds and is not receiving concurrent financial benefits from public funds at the time of applying for the program (e.g. National Health Fund benefits).

Effectiveness confirmed by research
Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy is a researched and recommended method of treating the complex problem of depression in children, adolescents and adults. The therapy consists of meetings between the patient or the patient's parents/guardians and the therapist to define the problems associated with depression, to learn about the mechanisms involved in our thinking and emotions, and to work on homework related to the challenges of everyday life.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) was developed in the 1960s to treat depression and is now the fastest-growing form of therapy. There are no contraindications to treatment with this method. Scientific research into the effectiveness of CBT has made it the best-documented form of psychological treatment and it is now included in treatment algorithms for anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, schizophrenia, eating disorders, addictions, sleep disorders, and personality disorders - partly because it is effective in a relatively short time and has long-lasting effects.
The cognitive-behavioural approach is characterised by a long-standing emphasis on testing whether the methods it proposes are effective. This brings it closer to the field of evidence-based medicine.
