About the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects
ShanghaiRanking started publishing global university rankings by academic subjects in 2009. In 2017, they launched the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), which uses an improved methodology to evaluate the performance of universities in 55 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences.
Universities are assessed based on five key criteria, including:
- research output
- research influence based on number of citations
- international collaboration
- research quality demonstrated by the number of papers published in leading journals or participation in prestigious conferences
- total number of employees receiving significant international academic awards
In total, this year's ranking includes over 1,900 universities from 104 countries and regions.
