Providing highly specialized expertise to political decision makers
In a highly competitive process for funding under the Horizon Europe program, two consortia of universities and think tanks have been selected to carry out multiannual research projects funded by the European Commission, under the HORIZON-CL2-2021-TRANSFORMATIONS-01-07 funding scheme. Each consortium receives up to EUR 4 million in funding for a three-year period.
The consortium working on the “Dealing with a resurgent China” (DWARC) project, recognizes the resurgence of China as a top tier great power that is changing the world. Therefore, the EU needs to develop a long-term knowledge-based approach to engage strategically with this power.
To assist this process, the consortium brings together some of the best researchers across seven EU member states to work in a synergetic way to develop a world class independent knowledge base on China in Europe. Members of the consortium include:
The key subjects the consortium will address encompass all key areas identified in the HORIZON call, namely, society and culture, politics, economy, and foreign policy.
The consortium implementing the DWARC project will begin its work in November 2022.
SWPS University contributes cultural studies expertise
Researchers from SWPS University will contribute their cultural studies expertize to the DWARC project. The team, headed by Professor Marcin Jacoby, will carry out two separate enquiries, including: mapping the functioning of the cultural sector in China, and investigating social topics tackled by Chinese artists in theatre, literature, film, and art. Both enquiries aim to provide new insight into the Chinese cultural discourse of the last ten years, and describe the dynamics in the relations between artists, their audiences, and the Chinese authorities.
We intend to discover a lesser known side of modern China, which is highly engaged, critical of various social issues, and not always following the official Party lines
