Empathy with Devils: Wang Yangming's Contribution to Contemporary Moral Philosophy
East Asian Civilization Research Center at SWPS University’s Institute of Humanities, in cooperation with the Confucius Institute at Adam Mickiewicz University, is pleased to invite all interested parties to attend a guest lecture by the renowned scholar, Prof. Huang Yong. The upcoming presentation will focus on the enduring significance of Confucian insights, particularly in Wang Yangming's exploration of empathy with unempathic individuals.
While the philosophical discussion of empathy is acknowledged to have emerged in China earlier than in the West, it is often deemed outdated in contemporary Chinese philosophy by extensive contemporary Western studies. Professor Huang Yong challenges this belief, asserting that Confucian insights into empathy, particularly in Wang Yangming's work, have been overlooked. The lecture will delve into one such insight: empathy with unempathic persons, or, simply, empathy with devils.
The event will be conducted in English.
