For the second consecutive year, SWPS University joined Noc Anglistów (Night of the English Studies Experts), a nationwide event celebrating English culture and language. This year's program featured our lecturers discussing the impact of tools such as ChatGPT on language. They also introduced attendees to climate fiction (cli-fi), a growing genre in literature and film, and reflected on the most hotly debated American presidential elections in history.
What is Noc Anglistów?
Noc Anglistów was launched in 2021 by the Faculty of English at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Its aim is to dispel the widespread myth that English studies are solely about learning the language. Through lectures, workshops, and webinars, the organizers want to highlight the rich academic potential of English studies in Poland. This year's event, held on November 29, brought together 20 universities from 18 Polish cities, including SWPS University.
AI: should we be concerned?
The program prepared by the Department of English Studies at the Faculty of Humanities in Warsaw included a lecture on how tools like ChatGPT shape language use. Dr. Matthew Riemland addressed widespread fears and misconceptions about artificial intelligence. He also emphasized the importance of focusing on the real risks posed by AI instead of getting distracted by exaggerated concerns about its potential. A recording of this lecture is available on YouTube.

Fun facts from the English-speaking world
This year, Noc Anglistów once again offered engaging presentations on a variety of topics set within the English-language context. The Department of English Studies at SWPS University contributed:
- A mini-lecture on U.S. history: Prof. Mikołaj Wiśniewski examined the most controversial presidential elections in American history.
- An introduction to cli-fi: Dr. Emma Oki introduced the audience to climate fiction, a relatively new literary and cinematic subgenre that explores environmental issues.
- Linguistic workshops: The Omnilinguae Linguistics Research Group led interactive sessions on the origins of selected English words, providing participants with a fresh perspective on the language.
