CEDMO International Conference “Europe Tackles Information Chaos”
Central European Digital Media Observatory is one of eight hubs selected by the European Commission for the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO). The goal of CEDMO is to implement a highly experienced hub, working against disinformation in the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia.
To summarize the first year of its activity members of the CEDMO Consortium, including NGOs, academics, think tanks, journalists, and legislative and technology actors will explore a comprehensive range of topics, such as Chinese and Russian propaganda, media and information literacy, and the impact of disinformation on societies.
Prof. Karina Stasiuk-Krajewska from the Faculty of Law and Communication in Wrocław, who leads SWPS University's team of researchers working on the CEDMO project, will present results of research carried out by the team.
The conference aims to reflect on the nature of misinformation and ways we can prevent fake news. We will focus on CEDMO’s achievements so far. Therefore, we will discuss the research results carried out by the researchers from SWPS University in cooperation with our Polish and international partners. Furthermore, we will review the legislation concerning disinformation in various countries. Finally, we will discuss various ways of fighting disinformation, such as: education, fact-checking, and potential applications of artificial intelligence (AI). Obviously, we will pay special attention to Russian disinformation. Due to SWPS University's role in CEDMO, my presentation will be focused on research and media literacy.

Contribution of SWPS University’s team to the CEDMO consortium
The Central European Digital Media Observatory (CEDMO) is one of the hubs participating in the European Digital Media Observatory project. CEDMO focuses on identifying, researching and prioritizing the most critical sources and causes of information disorders in Central Europe (mainly the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland).
As the fake news problem requires attention from multiple angles, CEDMO’s research team includes scientists specializing in technology and humanities, journalists, and fact-checking professionals.
SWPS University is one of the eight partners involved in the CEDMO consortium, led by Charles University in the Czech Republic. Our team, led by Prof. Karina Stasiuk-Krajewska, coordinates the research activities of the whole consortium and prepares the majority of research reports. The researchers also conduct educational projects to improve awareness of fake news and promote fake news verification standards.
First of all, we must understand that disinformation will never disappear from the media landscape. Not only is it fostered by social media mechanisms, but also by significant changes in the traditional media, such as the increased work pace imposed on journalists. Therefore, in my opinion, education is essential. We must teach people critical media literacy, build public trust in science, and show them simple fact-checking tools. Of course, we need to educate a diverse audience, from children and young people, through teachers, to media professionals and the PR industry.
