Over the past 50 years, we have been experiencing rapid and profound technological changes that impact the way we live and behave. On the one hand technology is making our lives easier, provided it is well designed to meet our needs, and on the other hand technological innovations are forcing us to rethink our laws and ethical boundaries.

The first event in the HumanTech Meetings series, organized by SWPS University’s Center for Innovation will focus on the interactions of humans with technology, including UX design, business, and education. The meeting will be hosted by Dr. Konrad Maj and the panel discussion will be moderated by Dr. Max Bielecki from SWPS University.

The meeting, which is part of "InnoShare 2019" event, will take place at the Copernicus Science Center.

HumanTech Meetings

We live in an era of innovation, technological progress and digitalization. This current innovation drive may lead to unpredictable psychological and social outcomes. Therefore, it is crucial to establish collaborations between engineers, programmers, IT specialists and social scientists during initial phases of any new projects related to development of new technologies or services. Such collaborations may help to avoid mistakes and can support better development of new ideas.

The project is planned as a series of meetings, gathering academics and professionals from the technology sector from Poland and other countries. Each meeting will include two lectures, one delivered by a speaker from Poland and one presented by a guest from another country. The lectures will be followed by panel discussions, where panelists will represent different approaches to innovation and technology.

HumanTech Meetings is a project of SWPS University's Center for Innovation. The aim of the project is to initiate cooperation between the technology sector and social scientists to present different perspectives on phenomena such as Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, algorithms, robotics as well as virtual and augmented reality.

Lectures

Lecture 1: Anthropology, Design, and Converging Pathways in the Sciences

The world we inhabit is changing faster than we can comprehend. Not only are we experiencing a time of unbridled technological innovation and the subsequent disruption of established social and cultural norms, but we are also witnessing profound changes to our physical environment. This presentation will explore how the comingling of design and anthropological theory and practice provides an example of disciplinary boundaries that have become more permeable in an effort to meet the complex challenges we face.

Christine Miller

Christine Miller, Ph.D. – educator, researcher, and practitioner working at the intersection of anthropology, design, and business. She completed her Ph.D. at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan in an interdisciplinary doctoral program that allowed her to integrate anthropology, management/organizational studies and business. Her dissertation research - an ethnographic study of process formalization and the relationship between innovation and formalization at a Tier One automotive supplier - focused on the sociocultural and organizational dimensions of innovation processes. Her research interests include socio-technical systems and the ways in which sociality and culture influence the design and diffusion/adoption/adaptation of new products, processes, and technologies. She is also interested in communication and knowledge flows, especially between diverse groups and within collaborative innovation networks (COINs). Currently she is a Co-Principal Investigator on an NSF study of Ethics in STEM research (“A Bottom-Up Approach to Enhancing a Culture of Responsible Research and Practice in STEM”). The goal of this project is to design an alternative to traditional ethics education that incorporates a series of group conversations within STEM labs that allow ethical concerns to emerge, be examined, and articulated in a set of locally crafted guidelines that reflect the ethical culture of the lab.

Lecture 2: HumanTech in practice: Post-graduate program in UX and product design. How to teach innovation through practice

Hubert Anyżewski will share his nine-year experience of teaching UX Design to postgraduate students attending an innovative program offered by SWPS University in three cities.
